Road Trip by Sunhawk
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: gen, subtextual Heero/Duo and Quatre/Trowa
Summary: When a mission ends badly Duo's left with the task of driving himself and a badly injured Heero to safety.
>>: This is a nice inversion of the typical 'road trip' stories. Yeah, they get to see a different side of each other over the course of the journey and it brings them closer together…but they're both urgently in need of medical attention and there are cops everywhere out for their blood. Tons of junk food is consumed, and random little adventures are had…by Duo, who's desperately trying to stay awake so he can get to safety before his buddy kicks it. 'S also nice to see a more vulnerable side of Heero while he's still reasonably in character~

Blood Brothers by Hades' Phoenix
Rating: R
Pairing: gen
Warnings: adult subject matter; mention of things that should never happen to Wufei
Summary: When Wufei's last surviving relative betrays him in the worst way possible the other pilots teach the man that when you fuck with one of them, you fuck with the whole family.
>>: This is the story that made me see the appeal of Gundam Wing fanfiction. It plays up the deep bonds between the pilots while emphasizing the ruthlessness that didn't go away just because the war ended. The second chapter / companion piece amps up the angst though, so I'd wait a bit before reading it if you want to hold on to the warmth evoked by the first part. ;_;

Heart Like a Hand Grenade by Link Worshiper
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Duo/Heero
Warnings: m/m
Summary: Years after the war Duo realizes that he's unsatisfied with his life and heads to earth looking for direction, something to bring meaning to his existence. He ends up staying in the slums of Chicago while he gets together the money to move on, but as that which he's searching for continues to elude him his stay stretches longer and longer...
>>: God, the writing in this is just fantastic. Stories like this are rarely put together so neatly, so this was a real treat. It's told through a series of letters, articles, and journal entries, but unlike many stories written in that style this doesn't take away from the story at all; rather, the documents are flawless in their expression of each character's point of view and this allows the characters to drive the story at their own pace and gives the reader a keen insight into the way each views the world. Poor Duo is so much more screwed up than he realizes, and Heero isn't necessarily doing too well himself, and they need each other so much that it just draws you in. The realism of the piece was also fantastic, in tone if not, perhaps, in plot—it *feels* real in a way that's very rare. In short: I'm blown away, and I think you will be too.

Reverse Psychology by Hades' Phoenix
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: gen, Heero/Duo friendship
Warnings: one-shot
Summary: Most people become Preventers to maintain world peace. Duo Maxwell, however, is not most people.
>>: A comical tale of what happens when Duo decides to join the Preventers and is required to pass a standardized IQ test. As usual, when things don't go Shinigami's way chaos ensues...

The Drums of Heaven by Sol 1056
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Heero/Duo, slight Quatre/Trowa, others
Warnings: m/m
Summary: Five years after EW Heero lives quietly as a simple photographer, trying to find his place in a world at peace. However, when he hears that Duo and Trowa are in some kind of trouble he realizes that he'll never be able to grow by avoiding the people who mean the most to him, so he decides to track down his old friends to lend them a hand and let them back into his life. But five years is a long time, and the situation proves to be more complicated than he could have ever imagined. Heero soon finds himself entangled in a complex web of subterfuge with no way to know anyone's true goals or motivations…perhaps even his own.
>>: Whew. When I say 'complex web of subterfuge' (what? How would you phrase it?) I really mean it—the plot is so complex and so carefully unfolded that it keeps you on your toes all the way to the end. I don't think I've ever read a story that keeps its readers (and poor Heero) in the dark so skilfully for such a long time, giving up pieces of the puzzle a few at a time, so that by the time you realize just how big the puzzle is you're as overwhelmed as the characters and can scarcely grasp the whole picture even when it's all put together (at least, that's how I felt by the end of it.). Everything is suspect, and ultimately Heero's struggle to figure out who he really is and what he really wants, while interesting, is about the most straightforward part of this story. There's some OOCness brought on by the missing five years, but overall the characterization was pretty well done. This story also provided a wonderful look into the kind of awful dilemmas that can result from going deep undercover. If I were Heero, I'd have shot myself in the head a dozen times over. >_< But this story's really something, and despite the frustration the reader is inevitably subjected to, you don't want to miss it.

The Whisper Series by Maldoror !
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Duo/Heero, s Quatre/Trowa
Warnings: m/m
Summary: Kicks off with Duo playing a dangerous (and rather creepy, really, which is actually a nice touch) game pitting his stealth against a sleeping Heero; goes on to follow the development of their relationship throughout the war.
>>: The characterization in this is just fantastic; this is everything I could ask for in a GW fic. Heero thinks like a computer, all cold efficiency, but beneath that he's actually very human (in the most perfect way imaginable). Duo's just…Duo, I could write a thousand words here and not properly describe how perfectly Maldoror captured his personality—I'm a whisper, a silence, a cipher, a patch of nothing ghosting down the ramp to shadow Rich's slow footsteps out of the hangar. I leave Jack and his unnamed colleague to die in flame and fury behind me. OZ scum and human beings, we're all just these little paradoxes aren't we? No hard feelings, guys, you'd do worse to me. Enjoy your last twenty minutes. I just can't stress enough how much I love the characterization of them in this. The other pilots, while not as involved in the story, are done wonderfully as well (watch for the last arc on that count, especially; and I must say, I have never seen a 'series of misunderstandings' bit done anywhere near that well). This's got humour, angst, drama, romance, and action aplenty, as well as a take on the psychology of the pilots that I absolutely adore. Good stuff! Be sure to check out Maldoror's other stories as well; of particular note are The Arrangement, Darkside Tales, and The Source of All Things. And Monsters. And Flayed Horses. And Trial and Error. And Nil By Mouth. And…did I mention I love this writer?
